How Much to Water

Water lightly 2–3 times per day for the first 2–3 weeks, aiming for about 10–15 minutes per session. Adjust based on rainfall—Southeast Indiana’s spring and fall showers may reduce your watering needs.

Timing

Water early in the morning or late afternoon to minimize evaporation during hot summer days.

After Germination

Once grass begins to sprout (typically 7–21 days, depending on the seed mix), reduce watering to once daily, then gradually taper to 1–2 times per week as the lawn matures.

Residential

Hydroseeding is significantly cheaper than sod, making it ideal for homeowners in Evansville or Jasper looking to establish lush lawns without breaking the bank.

Commercial

Erosion Control

The mulch in hydroseed mixtures binds to soil, preventing erosion on sloped properties or near rivers, common in Southeast Indiana’s Ohio River Valley.

Protect Your Lawn from Foot Traffic

Your new lawn is delicate as it establishes. Too much activity can compact the soil or disrupt seed germination.

Keep Off the Grass: For the first 3–4 weeks, avoid walking, playing, or placing heavy objects on the hydroseeded area. This is especially important for families in growing neighborhoods like Boonville, where kids or pets may be tempted to explore new lawns.

When to Mow

Wait until the grass reaches about 3–4 inches tall, typically 4–6 weeks after hydroseeding. For cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass or tall fescue (common in our region), this may take slightly longer in cooler fall months.

Mowing Height

Set your mower blade to a high setting (about 3 inches) to avoid scalping the grass. Short cuts can weaken roots, especially in our region’s clay-heavy soils.

Youth Education Programs

Mow once a week once the lawn is established, ensuring you never remove more than one-third of the grass height at a time.

How should you adapt to seasons?

Spring/Fall

These are ideal times for hydroseeding and maintenance. Focus on consistent watering and light fertilization to encourage root growth.

Summer

Water deeply but less frequently during dry spells, especially in July or August, to prevent drought stress. Mulch clippings to retain moisture.

Winter

Avoid heavy foot traffic on frozen or dormant grass to prevent damage. Clear debris like leaves to avoid smothering the lawn.
